摘要 (Abstract):
Density functional theory is a very successful and, in principle, exact method for describing quantum-mechanical many-body problems. Its origin goes back to the fifties of the last century, and it has been used primarily for electronic systems, such as atoms, molecules, and solid-state configurations, where it has been state of the art for many years. Its great advantage, as compared to the solution of the Schroedinger equation with many-body wave functions depending on hundreds of coordinates, is its simplicity. It is based on the energy density functional, the ground state energy of the system, depending only on its local density with three coordinates. For electronic systems, where the basic interaction is the well-known Coulomb force, this functional is, by now, known to a high precision. In nuclear physics, where the situation is much more complicated, non-relativistic and relativistic density functional theory has also been used successfully for nearly half a century.
In this talk, we discuss the basics of density functional theory in general and, in particular, its advantages and problems for the description of nuclear systems. We present recent applications of this
method for nuclei far from the valley of stability and for astrophysical systems.
