(Abstract):

(Speaker's CV):

On September 14, 2015, the two instruments of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) observed a gravitational wave transient that has been associated with the coalescence of a binary black hole. Here I will describe the history of the discovery, the exquisite technology that has enabled this detection and the physical properties that we have inferred about the source. I will present the results of the analysis of the full data collected during the first observing run of Advanced LIGO and discuss the prospects for the future with ground-based observations, as well as Pulsar Timing Arrays and future spaceborne instruments.
